Monash University, Indonesia began teaching its first students on October 4, 2021, becoming the first foreign university to operate in Indonesia, the Australian institution said. The inaugural cohort enrolled in master's programs in data science, public policy and management, urban design and business innovation at the campus southwest of Jakarta.

Monash said the postgraduate campus is designed to grow progressively to about 2,000 students a year and to offer master's and PhD degrees, executive programs and micro-credentials in areas of high demand. The university also expects the campus to support research collaboration with Indonesian institutions and closer engagement with industry. Indonesia's education minister welcomed the start of operations.

The campus was first announced on February 10, 2020, when Monash said it had received Indonesian government approval for a research-intensive, industry-engaged postgraduate institution, with a first master's intake planned for the fourth quarter of 2021. It was formally inaugurated in BSD City in April 2022, when Monash listed additional master's degrees in public health and cybersecurity and partnerships with Tokopedia, Traveloka and Bank Mandiri. Monash also has a campus in Malaysia and partnered sites in Suzhou, China, and Mumbai, India.
