Kuwait-based education technology company Baims has acquired Egyptian tutoring startup Orcas, in a deal reported on January 8, 2024. Baims took full ownership of Orcas, and the value of the transaction was not disclosed.

Baims provides pre-recorded online courses for university and high school students in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan. Orcas offers one-to-one tutoring for K-12 students, including pupils at international schools in Egypt. The combined company plans to bring both services together on a single platform. It also intends to launch a test preparation product in Saudi Arabia that uses artificial intelligence, extend one-to-one tutoring to more markets and add courses for more Saudi universities.

Baims was founded in 2017 and Orcas in 2019. Together the two companies had raised more than $11 million from investors including Access Bridge Ventures, Algebra Ventures and NFX Ventures. The merged business is targeting Saudi Arabia, the other Gulf states, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Jordan. The companies put the size of the education market in the Middle East and North Africa at about $100 billion.
