GoStudent, the Vienna-based online tutoring company, announced on December 2, 2022 that it was acquiring Studienkreis, a German provider of center-based tutoring, from the private equity firm IK Partners. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Studienkreis was founded in 1974 and operates more than 1,000 learning centers in Germany, serving about 125,000 families a year across the German-speaking DACH region. It has offered online learning since 2012 and expanded into Austria through its 2018 purchase of LernQuadrat. IK Partners had owned the business since 2017. GoStudent said the deal would let it combine its online lessons with a physical network of tuition centers, reflecting its view that learning will increasingly be delivered in a hybrid format.

GoStudent provides paid one-to-one video lessons in more than 30 subjects and reports over 1.5 million tutoring sessions per month. The company has raised €591 million from investors including SoftBank, Deutsche Telekom and Tencent, and was valued at €3 billion at the time of the deal. Studienkreis joins a group of earlier purchases by GoStudent: Seneca Learning in the United Kingdom, Tus Media Group in Spain and Fox Education in Austria.

Why it matters

The deal joins an Austrian online tutoring platform with a center-based tutoring network in the German-speaking region, showing how education providers are building cross-border, hybrid delivery models.
