The Una Europa university alliance said on October 3, 2022, that more than 270 students from 35 countries were starting its Joint Bachelor of Arts in European Studies that week. The alliance had announced the program on February 3, 2022, as its first joint bachelor's degree.

The curriculum was co-developed by Una Europa partner universities including KU Leuven, Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Bologna, the University of Edinburgh, Complutense University of Madrid, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Jagiellonian University in Kraków. It is multidisciplinary and multilingual, covering the European Union as well as European states and societies. Graduates receive a single diploma awarded jointly by the degree-awarding partners, and students can study in up to three countries during the program. Members of the first cohort began their studies at universities including KU Leuven, Complutense and Jagiellonian.

The degree was initiated under 1Europe, the alliance's Erasmus+ project, whose coordinator is based at KU Leuven. Una Europa presented it as a first step toward joint formats at all levels of education. The alliance also linked the program to the European Commission's goal of a European Education Area and to the policy discussion about a future European degree.

Why it matters

A single diploma issued jointly by universities in several countries, with mobility built into the curriculum, is a working test of the joint European degree model that EU policy is promoting.
