Google Classroom adds Gemini insight summaries for teacher-assigned notebooks

Google began rolling out Gemini-generated insight summaries for teachers who assign Gemini Notebooks through Google Classroom, the company said in a Workspace update on October 19, 2026. The feature is available to schools on the Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus editions of Google Workspace for Education.
The summaries give teachers an overview of how students engaged with an assigned notebook and group common themes, such as frequent student questions, areas of strength and areas that may need more support. Teachers can also open individual student chat transcripts to add context and to check whether the AI-generated insights are accurate. Students see a notice in the notebook that their conversations are visible to the teacher. The feature applies only to notebooks assigned through Classroom. Google said full rollout would start on October 19, with visibility taking one to three days, and that support for Gemini LTI users would follow in the coming weeks.
Administrators also gained finer controls over external sharing of Gemini Notebooks, which is off by default and can be set by domain, organizational unit or group. A Trusted Domains option lets teachers and students in designated domains create and assign notebooks together.
Why it matters
The update lets teachers see how students use an AI study tool and review the underlying chats, giving educators a way to check AI-generated insights before acting on them in class.
