Google announced on March 9, 2026, that all 20 of Malaysia's public universities had enabled Gemini for Education, in a rollout carried out with the country's Ministry of Higher Education. The deployment covers roughly 600,000 students and 75,000 faculty members.

The AI tools are switched on inside the Google Workspace for Education accounts that the universities already use. In addition, the ministry has provided Google AI Pro for Education to 40,000 faculty members and NotebookLM Enterprise to 128,000 students. Google gave examples from four institutions: Universiti Malaysia Perlis built custom study assistants for electronics engineering courses, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia used research tools in a communications course, Universiti Putra Malaysia reported on the use of NotebookLM in student research, and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak trained more than 500 lecturers, with 120 educators and about 500 students earning Gemini certification.

The company linked the deployment to Malaysia's aim of becoming an AI-driven nation by 2030 and listed training options such as the Gemilang initiative and Gemini certification for students and educators. In a separate post in September 2026, Google said more than 200,000 Malaysian educators had obtained Gemini certification and introduced a free AI training series for teachers together with the country's two education ministries.

Why it matters

The rollout makes generative AI tools available across an entire national public university system at once, for use in teaching, research and study.
