National Taiwan University (NTU) held the opening ceremony for its Graduate School of Advanced Technology on December 24, 2021. The event was attended by Taiwan's president and senior officials from the education, science and technology, and national development agencies. The school was established in academic year 2021 with funding and personnel from semiconductor companies including TSMC, MediaTek and Etron Technology.

The school offers master's and doctoral programs in three areas: integrated circuit design and automation; semiconductor devices, materials and hetero-integration; and nanoengineering and nanoscience. NTU reported that nearly 280 candidates signed up for the screening and test for first-year admission to the master's programs and 75 were admitted, with doctoral admissions scheduled for March and April 2022. Courses are developed jointly with industry, professionals from partner companies serve as faculty members, students have access to research and development internships, and teaching is in English.

The school was set up under Taiwan's Innovation Act Governing the National Key Fields Industry-University Cooperation and Skilled Personnel Training, which provided the framework for its establishment. NTU's colleges of electrical engineering and computer science, engineering, and science provide faculty support. According to the university, the goals are to train high-level talent, build a public-private mechanism for co-education, carry out pioneering research, and support Taiwan's position in the advanced technology supply chain.

Why it matters

The school shows a university and chipmakers sharing the cost and delivery of graduate training, tying advanced degrees directly to the skills the semiconductor industry needs.
