Kahoot! announced new classroom features on 3 September 2026 for the back-to-school season, aimed at helping teachers engage students and track progress. The headline additions are two device-free game modes for classrooms with few devices or where teachers want less screen time. In Classic: Unplugged, questions appear only on a shared screen and students agree answers as a class or in teams, which the teacher then submits. Team Tiles: Unplugged has teams choose tiles that reveal questions.

The company also made it easier to align content with curricula. US educators with a Kahoot! EDU site licence can now tag content against national standards and the standards of all 50 states, and search public content by standard. Kahoot! said it is one of five organisations chosen for the UK Department for Education's AI Education Content Store public beta support programme, testing how curriculum-aligned source material can support AI-assisted creation of learning content.

Kahoot! said more than 300 independent studies have examined its platform and pointed to findings on engagement, participation, lower test anxiety and better test performance. It said it ranked first on EduEvidence's Global EdTech Evidence List of 1,000 products. Liz Crawford, senior director of global education, said educators are being asked to close learning gaps and prove impact at the same time, and that engagement should be the starting point for better outcomes.

Why it matters

Device-free modes and standards tagging respond to school concerns about screen time and evidence, and could widen the use of game-based formative assessment in classrooms with limited technology.
