The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), India's Ministry of Education and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi signed a memorandum of understanding on July 15, 2023, to establish an IIT Delhi campus in Abu Dhabi. It is the institute's first international campus, and the document was signed in the presence of the president of the United Arab Emirates and the prime minister of India.

Under the agreement, the campus is to offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, with academic programs expected to begin in 2024. Planned fields include energy and sustainability, artificial intelligence, computer science and engineering, and mathematics and computing, along with other engineering and science disciplines. The campus is also expected to host research centers on sustainable energy and climate studies and on computing and data sciences. The parties named Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Khalifa University, New York University Abu Dhabi, the Technology Innovation Institute and Hub71 as local institutions it would work alongside.

India's government said the memorandum builds on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between the two countries. IIT Delhi is part of a network of 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, and the Abu Dhabi site gives its graduates in the Gulf access to that alumni network.

Why it matters

The agreement takes one of India's public engineering institutes abroad for the first time, adding a new type of international branch campus to Abu Dhabi's higher-education sector.
