Indonesian education technology company CoLearn announced on February 3, 2022, that it had raised US$17 million in follow-on Series A funding, closing the round at a total of US$27 million.

The new tranche was led by TNB Aura and KTB Network, with BINUS Group joining as a strategic partner. Existing backers AWI, Sequoia Capital India's Surge, GSV Ventures, AC Ventures, Leo Capital and January Capital also took part. The first US$10 million of the Series A had been led by Alpha Wave Incubation and GSV Ventures. With the extension, the total capital raised by CoLearn reached US$34 million. The company said the money would go toward its go-to-market work, growing its base of paying users in Indonesia, and raising awareness of its cohort-based live classes.

CoLearn was launched in August 2020 by Abhay Saboo, Marc Irawan and Sandeep Devaram. Its best-known product, Tanya, is an AI-based homework help tool to which students send questions. At the time of the announcement the company reported more than 4.8 million users, over 85 million questions asked since launch, and more than 10 million queries each month.

Why it matters

CoLearn's AI homework helper handled more than 10 million student queries a month, and the extension gave it funds to turn that usage into paid live classes in Indonesia.
