About The University of Tokyo
The University of Tokyo was established in 1877 through the merger of Tokyo Kaisei School and Tokyo Medical School, and later absorbed specialist institutions such as the Imperial College of Engineering to become a comprehensive research university. Since 2004 it has operated as a national university corporation. It has ten faculties and fifteen graduate schools spanning the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, agriculture, medicine and pharmacy, plus a large network of research institutes. All undergraduates spend their first two years in the College of Arts and Sciences before moving to a specialist department. The core campuses are Hongo, Komaba and Kashiwa. The university reports 29,669 students, including 5,234 international students, and 11,948 academic and administrative staff (December 2025).
