Indian Institute of Science Bangalore
A research-focused institute in Bengaluru offering postgraduate, doctoral and undergraduate research programmes across the sciences, engineering, design and management.
About Indian Institute of Science Bangalore
The Indian Institute of Science was conceived by the industrialist Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in the 1890s and formally established in Bangalore on 27 May 1909, admitting its first 24 students in 1911. It began with departments of general and applied chemistry and electrical technology, later adding biochemistry, physics, aeronautics, metallurgy and mechanical engineering. Today its work is organised into seven divisions covering the biological, chemical, physical and mathematical sciences, electrical and computer sciences, mechanical sciences, interdisciplinary research and medical sciences. The main campus stands on land given by the then Mysore State, and the institute has added a 1,500-acre campus at Challakere in Chitradurga district. The institute's general information page lists 433 faculty members and 3,754 students. Teaching spans a four-year BS (Research), a BTech, master's programmes and doctoral study.
