Preply, an online language-tutoring marketplace started by Ukrainian founders and headquartered in the United States, announced on January 21, 2026 that it had raised $150 million in a Series D funding round. The financing values the company at $1.2 billion.

WestCap led the round, with participation from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Horizon Capital. Preply said its total funding now stands at approximately $299 million. The company intends to use the proceeds to advance its artificial intelligence capabilities, enlarge its product and engineering teams and speed up international growth. Planned work includes AI tools that help tutors prepare lesson plans and homework and that improve the matching of learners with tutors.

Preply connects learners with more than 100,000 tutors teaching over 90 languages, and serves users in 180 countries. Since its Series C round, the company says it has more than tripled the number of bookable tutors, added more than 40 languages and become EBITDA positive. The marketplace has been connecting learners with tutors since 2013. Three of its four offices are in Europe, in Barcelona, London and Kyiv, with the fourth in New York, and about 150 of its roughly 750 employees work in Kyiv. It describes its model as tutoring led by human teachers and supported by AI.

Why it matters

Preply plans to spend much of the new capital on AI tools that assist human tutors, a test of how AI can be combined with live instruction in language learning.
