IE University, which has a campus in Madrid, Spain, announced on February 18, 2025, an initiative with OpenAI to deploy AI tools across its academic ecosystem. Under the arrangement, ChatGPT Edu, a version of the chatbot built for educational institutions, is being made available to students, faculty and staff.

Bachelor's and master's students will take training courses titled AI for Productivity and AI 101, which cover digital skills with an emphasis on ethical use, critical thinking and responsible application, and each student will receive an AI certification. Faculty will continue to receive specialized training to bring AI into research and teaching, and administrative staff will use the technology in operational work. IE said a team from OpenAI was working with students and professors that week at IE Tower, its technology-focused campus in Madrid.

The university described the collaboration as an expansion of an AI initiative it began in 2023, when it published a manifesto on the role of AI in education. IE, which says it introduced online master's degrees in Europe 25 years ago, cited outside projections that generative AI could become a $1.3 trillion market by 2032.

Why it matters

Institution-wide access combined with required AI courses and a certification for every student is one model for how universities are building generative AI into teaching rather than leaving adoption to individuals.
