Chulalongkorn University in Thailand unveiled ChulaGENIE, a generative AI platform built with Google Cloud, in an announcement made in Bangkok on November 28, 2024. The university said more than 50,000 staff, faculty members and students would receive free access.

Computer Weekly reported that access would open to staff and faculty in January 2025 and to all students by March 2025. The platform runs on Google Cloud's Vertex AI and starts with Google's Gemini 1.5 Flash and Pro models, with Anthropic's Claude and Meta's Llama models to follow. Planned features include multilingual processing of documents containing tables, charts and images, and custom AI agents for tasks such as research assistance, academic advising and administrative support. Safety filters, encryption, access controls and grounding with Google Search are part of the design.

The two organizations are also working on an open-source Thai large language model for higher education, and more than 800 members of the university had already completed the Google AI Essentials course. A notice on the university's website dated January 25, 2025 said faculty and staff were using the service, offered in two tiers within a closed system that keeps data inside the university, with student access due in March 2025.

Why it matters

Giving an entire university community managed access to several AI models, with safeguards and staff training, is an institution-wide approach to AI in teaching, research and administration.
